Market-driven youth employment and livelihoods programming combining market research, digital skills training, employer engagement, and MSME support — with explicit inclusion targets — across Iraq and the MENA region.
Youth unemployment in conflict-affected communities is not simply an economic problem — it is a social cohesion problem, a security problem, and a generational problem. Young people without pathways to economic participation are more vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups, more likely to leave their communities, and less invested in their community's future. Aligning Cultures designs youth employment and livelihoods programs that address this challenge in the most practical, market-grounded way possible.
We start with the market — not with assumptions about what skills young people need. Our programs begin with rigorous employer surveys and job seeker assessments to identify the real gap between available talent and actual demand. We design training curricula that close that gap specifically, then we create the connections between trained youth and employers that translate training into employment. This market-first approach ensures that the skills we teach are the skills that lead to real jobs.
Across Iraq and the MENA region, Aligning Cultures has reached 8,000+ youth with employment and livelihoods programming. Our programs set explicit inclusion targets for women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities — ensuring that the young people most excluded from economic opportunity are prioritized, not overlooked.

In Diyala Governorate, an Aligning Cultures strategic communications partner launched a Telegram-based private sector job matching network that leveraged his personal professional connections with company managers and business leaders. In just five months, this grassroots initiative placed 39 young people in full-time employment — a concrete result that reflects the power of combining community trust, digital tools, and employer relationships. This model is now being replicated and scaled across other Iraqi provinces, demonstrating that the most effective livelihoods solutions are often designed by people who know their communities from the inside.
In post-conflict Iraq, many young people face a labor market that is simultaneously saturated with informal work and starved of skilled digital economy talent. Aligning Cultures' digital skills training programs bridge this gap — training youth in practical digital economy skills including graphic design, data entry, social media management, e-commerce, and freelance work platforms. These skills create income-generating opportunities that are not dependent on local employer density, enabling youth in even the most economically depressed communities to participate in the global digital economy.
For communities where formal employment opportunities are scarce, self-employment and small business creation are the primary pathways to economic participation. Aligning Cultures' micro, small, and medium enterprise development programming provides youth entrepreneurs with business planning support, financial literacy training, mentorship from experienced business owners, and access to small startup grants. We are particularly focused on businesses that serve community needs — creating livelihoods while also strengthening the local service economy.
Aligning Cultures sets explicit inclusion targets in all youth employment and livelihoods programming — ensuring that women, persons with disabilities, and ethnically or religiously marginalized youth are not excluded from the economic opportunities that programs create. In post-conflict Iraq, where women and persons with disabilities face compounded barriers to employment, these targets are not symbolic — they are programmatic commitments backed by specific recruitment, accommodation, and support strategies.
Iraq's conflict legacy includes hundreds of thousands of persons who acquired disabilities as a direct result of violence. Yet Iraq's education and employment systems largely exclude persons with disabilities — a moral failure with direct security implications, as exclusion increases vulnerability to exploitation and radicalization. Aligning Cultures' youth employment programs include explicit disability inclusion targets, accessible program design, and advocacy for employer practices that create opportunities for persons with disabilities.
