GenAI for Civil Society Organizations

Practical AI Literacy for MENA Civil Society

Civil society organizations in the MENA region face a rapidly changing technological landscape that presents both opportunities and risks. On the opportunity side, generative AI tools can dramatically increase the productivity of resource-constrained organizations — enabling better proposals, more compelling communications, more efficient data analysis, and more effective program design. On the risk side, AI-generated disinformation threatens the information ecosystems that civil society depends on, and automation threatens the employment pathways that beneficiaries rely on.

Aligning Cultures designs GenAI curricula that address both dimensions — equipping civil society organizations to use AI tools productively while understanding the risks they pose to their communities. Our curricula are practical, not theoretical: participants leave with skills they can apply immediately in their organizational contexts.

AI-Generated Disinformation and Counter-Disinformation

The emergence of generative AI has fundamentally changed the disinformation landscape in the MENA region. Deepfakes — AI-generated audio, video, and images that appear real — have dramatically lowered the cost of producing convincing false content. Algorithmically targeted social media has dramatically increased the reach of disinformation campaigns. And the speed at which AI-generated content can be produced and distributed means that corrections and fact-checks almost always arrive too late.

Community-Level AI Disinformation Awareness

Aligning Cultures integrates AI disinformation awareness into all of our strategic communications and media literacy programming, ensuring that community members and civil society organizations are equipped to recognize and respond to this evolving threat. This includes practical training on how to identify AI-generated content, how to verify sources before sharing, and how to report harmful AI-generated content on social media platforms. In conflict-affected communities, where AI-generated disinformation can have life-or-death consequences — false reports of security incidents, fake evidence of atrocities, manufactured propaganda — this awareness is essential.

Digital Inclusion and Technology Access

Technology programming that ignores the digital divide fails the communities that most need support. In conflict-affected MENA communities, digital access is often constrained by infrastructure damage, economic barriers, gender-based restrictions on technology use, and low prior digital literacy. Aligning Cultures designs programs that meet communities where they are — starting with the technology they actually have access to and building digital literacy incrementally.

Our digital inclusion work includes mobile data collection using basic smartphones, WhatsApp-based information sharing systems, and offline-capable digital tools that work in low-connectivity environments. We partner with technology companies and academic institutions to adapt cutting-edge tools for community contexts that these tools were not originally designed for.
